Hans Paerl awarded lifetime achievement

2011-09-02

Hans Paerl, professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Institute of Marine Sciences in Morehead City, USA, is the 2011 winner of the Odum Award for Lifetime Achievement.

Hans Paerl, Ph.D., the William R. Kenan Distinguished Professor of Marine and Environmental Sciences, received the award for his four decades of work to clarify the causes, consequences and mitigation of blooms in estuarine and coastal environments.

The Odum Award recognizes the lifetime achievements of an outstanding estuarine scientist whose sustained accomplishments have made important contributions to the understanding of estuaries and coastal ecosystems.

Paerl’s research on the ecology and physiology of harmful algal bloom species is used by management agencies worldwide. He created FerryMon, a ferry-based water quality monitoring system originally used to collect data about the Pamlico Sound.
